The US and about 40 other countries warned on August 11 that testing nuclear-capable ballistic missiles without sufficient advance notice risks dangerous miscalculation and undermines regional and global security, following China’s long-range missile test in the Pacific last month. The group called on all countries to give at least 24 hours’ notice before launches, including the missile class, launch window, area and direction, and to issue clear warnings for aircraft and ships near expected impact zones. The meeting also focused on the lack of international access to detention sites, Ukrainians (Ureignians) missing in captivity, and cases in which third-country nationals were allegedly recruited for the war through deception. Iran is expected to join the BRICS New Development Bank in the near future, according to Iranian central bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, as Iran seeks closer financial ties with BRICS members. In this multipart series on Michael Hughes’ near-death experience, American artist Michael shares how a remarkable series of events surrounding his heart condition ultimately changed his understanding of life and death. Michael knew that he had heart valve problems and would eventually need surgery. But about a year before that operation, something happened at his home that left him wondering whether something— or someone— was watching over him.

It began one night with an unexpected reminder to step outside and watch a meteor shower. It was about a year before my surgery. I was at home, where I am now, and I went to bed, and I took my sleeping pill, got all tucked in, ready to go to sleep. And then I felt something behind me, underneath my back. And I pulled it out. It was my phone. And it said, “You should go out and look at the meteor shower tonight.” And I love showers, but I never get to see them. It’s always cloudy or whatever. So, I said, “Well, let me go out and take a look.” And I go out, and there are meteors everywhere. And I was like, “This is wild.” And I was out there for about a half an hour, and I finally said, “Alright, this is enough.” I said, “Let me see one more big one, and then I’ll go in.” And a big one flies by. And I turn, and I put my hand on the door, the slider, ready to go back in. And I just turned, and then I said a prayer, and I’m not religious. And I said, “GOD, I really need You to watch my back. I have all these heart issues. I need somebody to keep an eye on me.”

And that’s when I opened the door, and the house was full of gas. Ready to explode – so much gas that the place was filled. And I’ve flipped houses [buying and selling homes quickly] and stuff, so I know the smell. And I ran through the house, opened all the windows. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Finally, in the bathroom, the hose of the dryer had ruptured, and tons of gas was coming in. So, if that phone wasn’t underneath me and told me to go out, so many things had to happen just right for me not to die that night, either by explosion or by asphyxiation. So, once I got it all— pulled the dryer out, shut the valve off— I checked everything. I sat at the kitchen table for two hours, trying to figure out what just happened to me and why. And then it began to dawn on me. I began to get scared. Who would do all these maneuvers to save my life? What’s coming down the road that’s that I’m going to be part of?

In Part 2, Michael undergoes heart surgery. But when pneumonia strikes the following day, his medical crisis takes an unexpected turn. I remember being down a hallway. And I was standing down there, and I saw them run by with my body on the cart. And I said to myself, “Well, that doesn’t look good.” And I knew it was me.
